The negotiation of an EU-US free trade agreement, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), has put the spotlight on a highly controversial way foreign investors can sue governments around the world for damaged profits : Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS). While the public debate focuses on the inclusion of ISDS in TTIP, the problems of ISDS go far beyond the current trade talks with the US.
This public event will look beyond TTIP and take a close look at the EU’s investment agenda, and the part ISDS plays in this.
Prof. Gus van Harten, a world-known specialist on ISDS, will analyse the first EU-wide ISDS clauses and lift the veil of the EU’s agenda for reforming ISDS.
Charles Santiago, Malaysian Member of Parliament, will give a firsthand account how governments in the Global South are dealing with law suits threatened by foreign investors using ISDS.
After the event, drinks will be available at the Kamilou bar.
