Powerful Panasonic calls for a free trade agreement with Peru

Panasonic Latin America President, Masahiro Seyama calls to establish "active" talks.

Tokyo — Hiromi Hishikawa / ipcdigital.com — The Japanese appliances giant, Panasonic, has called for the establishment a free trade agreement between Japan and Peru.

"I hope that Peru is one of the countries entering Japan’s agenda for the signature of a free trade agreement, it is my strong desire," said Masahiro Seyama, president of Panasonic Corporation Latin America in an exclusive interview to be published in the next edition of the weekly International Press.

"With a Free Trade Agreement there will be a further development of both economies," said Seyama in an interview at the headquarters of Panasonic in Osaka.

He argued that to establish the FTA with Peru, more active talks are needed in the private sector and at the level of government officials.

Seyama, who has lived for more than 13 years in the Latin American region, said an FTA with Peru should put emphasis on the protection of intellectual property, tariff issues and an agreement to avoid double taxation.

The statements of the president of Panasonic Latin America come three weeks before the visit to Japan of Peruvian president Alan Garcia, which will seal the revival of relations between the two countries, damaged due to the Fujimori case.
