Colombia Playing Down FTA Rejection

8 March 2006

Bogota, Mar 8 (Prensa Latina) By presenting the Safe Agricultural Earnings bill, the Colombian government hopes to play down the major popular rejection against the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) it recently wrapped up with the US.

Pressured by the March 12 legislative elections, the Executive is pushing that bill to ease the FTA opposition of most Colombian farmers.

Agriculture producers disclosed they would vote against the Congressional nominees supporting that deal, which they consider harmful to national interests.

As Colombian Congress is in charge of passing or rejecting the FTA, national farmers will seek a majority of lawmakers opposed to that agreement.
