IEU CEPA: A threat to the environment, indigenous peoples, and biodiversity

Negotiations for the Indonesia-Europe Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU CEPA), initiated in 2016, have entered their eighth year. Despite continued talks, including virtual sessions during the pandemic, significant concerns regarding the potential social, environmental, biodiversity, and human rights impacts, particularly on Indigenous Peoples, remain unaddressed, with Indonesia yet to conduct impact studies on these issues.

This joint statement by Indonesia for Global Justice (IGJ) and WALHI (Friends of the Earth Indonesia) raises critical concerns about the proposed Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU CEPA). It highlights the potential negative impacts of the agreement, particularly when coupled with Indonesia’s Omnibus Law, on the environment, Indigenous communities, and biodiversity. The statement also criticizes the EU’s Green Deal in this context, questions the efficacy of the Trade and Sustainable Development chapter within the CEPA, and warns against the dangers of Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) or Investment Court System (ICS) mechanisms, ultimately outlining public demands for a more equitable and sustainable trade relationship.
