Activists protest possible Colombia trade deal

June 10, 2011 (CHICAGO) (WLS) — Religious and peace activists are demanding that President Obama keep a campaign promise to oppose a trade deal with a South American nation.

They gathered and marched outside his re-election campaign office on E. Randolph Friday afternoon.

Activists say Obama is moving forward with plans to finalize a free trade deal with Colombia.

The protestors say the president promised in his 2008 campaign to oppose such a deal as long as that country failed to protect workers organizing for better conditions.

The protestors say trade unionists have historically been a target for torture, assault and assassination in Colombia.
