Trade Ministry Mulls Overseas Farm Investments in FTAs

21 March 2008

Korea is mulling over including agricultural investment in free trade agreements with countries like China and Australia that export agricultural products.

In a press briefing Thursday, Trade Minister Kim Jong-hoon introduced this possible measure in which Korean firms would be able to invest in the agricultural industries of countries that it seals free trade deals with.

Korean farmers have long opposed the inclusion of agricultural products in FTAs.

As for the next round of free trade talks with the European Union, the minister hinted at the possibility of delaying them from initially planned dates in April due to the EU’s prolonged deliberation on tariffs.
